New page

Any student who attends just my Skype lectures on Wednesdays will have everything they need to succeed at this year's web development program. Whether you want an A+ for this course, or would simply be happy to pass, simply attend my lectures

To succeed with this course, go to basic web design

Advanced web design
To those who want to do more- something, "extra" over the course of the year, that is just for themselves!- well, that's what I want to think about here and look forward to your comments on.

But there's an entrance fee!
Any student who wants to join me here, on Advanced Web Design, must at least...

* Attend all my lectures, from the minute I start to the minute I say, "Can I go now?"
* Participate in my lectures, adding momentum to what we achieve and leaving a valuable trail behind, for others to follow when they try catch up with us.
* Be up to date with what I want!- and what I want right now is that you have NetBeans and/or other options installed on your computer, that will give you access to your websites.
* That you are hungry to do more than just the basics. For example, help find the right textbook for our students, if indeed we even want a textbook in the first place.

What can we do here?
I'm a collaborationist. I know how to let other powerful people influence me towards goals that are better for all. That's what I'm doing here- allowing you to get involved with some advance thinking, over what we might want- or not want!- to do, as the year progresses.

You want an example?
Fine, I'll give you an example....

JAVA
Black told me that they had hoped to cover a bit of Java last year, but things didn't go quite to plan. The wheels sort of fell off and they called me- and in just five weeks, I got a bit of stuff done, but nowhere near enough to get a taste of Java!

And if coronavirus has it's way with us, this could well happen again! If our class does not pull together- viz: all eight of our students and Black and me, making a total of ten of us- well, then we will lose Java again, this year, as far as testable course content is concerned

But, that said...

Here on Advanced Web Design, you might say something like, "Hey Cyber, can we do a bit of Java here?" ...and my answer will be yes.

"I think doing some Java would be good fun and could be a useful skill to have."

Yes, Phoenix!- in two environments. Let's use the terminology you see on NetBeans....

Java Application
You might want to learn to program anything from electric toothbrushes to spaceships. What you see here is are two machines driven on Java

For example, Spirit and Opportunity, the twin Mars Exploration Rovers.

This is where you write a Java program to work on a computer or to be used in robotics. For example, NetBeans is written in Java!- and I just shown you some Java robots that explored Mars for a number of years.

Java Web Application
And once you're ready for big boy and girl development on the Internet, I'll take you to the world of Tomcat servers

This is where you decide that you want your Java program to work over the Internet ....instead of building your website on HTML, you can build your website on Java.

Yes, NetBeans knows all about servers!- such as Tomcat. You'll be able to start building your own websites on your own computer, even when you have ZERO Internet!

Can NetBeans do this
Yes, NetBeans will do all the Java programming you'll ever need to blow your hair back, in either of these worlds. The students who are missing out on I have in mind for them, well ....let the mind boggle

Actually, when I put it this way, I see it would be best to not think of trying to get the rest of the class into any of this. Let's, as I've said, just keep this as an option here

System analysis
As a start...

* A systems analyst] assesses the suitability of information systems in terms of their intended outcomes and liaise with end users.
* Systems analysis is a problem-solving technique that breaks down a system into its component pieces for the purpose of the studying how well those component parts work.

WATCH THIS SPACE

Is there a future here?
If no one wants to do this, fine!- let's simply shutdown this, "conversation" and get back to scheduled lectures. However, I say Advanced Web Design 20C could and would have a valuable place in all our lives ....if we just wanted it to

Work allocation
So, what do we have allocated to Advanced Web Design so far. Let's see...

Java
See what I said above for more.

MediaWiki
We have our work cut our for us, when it comes to teaching web development to everyone. Thinking of teaching everyone something about web applications- such as how to work with wiki- might be an overload for the class. For this to work, I would need their attention, which I simply do not have.

Will there be more?
I think so, if coronavirus keeps up locked down and if I don't start to hear from the rest of the class.

Protect your code from theft
* Use a hidden page
* Use a web application
