This wiki is to support lectures and is a place where we can collect the details of what we need to do to build websites on the Internet

What do we want here?

This is not where we have formal lectures, but it is an additional resource to give students easy to access information regarding that has to be done

NetBeans in Web Development

NetBeans is fantastic when you get a new client- for example, you want to help someone with a Phoenix.Asterix.co.za. This means getting a PHP project started in NetBeans.

If you are not going to use NetBeans

You need about 350 MB of data to download and install Java and NetBeans

If this is too much, you'll need about 88 MB to download and install Brackets and FileZilla instead. If that is still too much, then you need at least 8 MB of data to download and install FileZilla.

Download your website files

Let's see what that download looks like.

Right click on, "Source Files" and hit, "Download" and let's see what happens- but again, you will see stuff I want to talk to you about...

WARNING

Do not just check all! There's all sorts of stuff here you do not want on your computer!

Let's look at what you see! The only single directory (or folder if you like) that you are interested in is the one with our sub-domain name. You should recognise all your files that are there! In your case, Phoenix, these will be the files on Phoenix.Asterix.co.za

Let's tick just that one single directory (or folder if you like) and you will see that that automatically ticks ALL the files on your website. THAT is when you tell NetBeans to download your files

Sometimes you might see a message that says, "Remember this operation as Remote Synchronization?" If you see this, just say yes

If students continue to lose time over coronavirus, we might well not have time to cover PHP. I have already removed hope of covering a bit of Java, due to the time- and contact too!- that we have lost already.

We need to find ways to get team-building started, where we encourage [[student}everyone]] to get involved. This will be more to do with everyone's day to day stress points, than what we'll talk about during our lectures
