WELCOME!

This is your new way of working the web!- from the very comfort of your own home! ....just like I've been doing for years and years

NetBeans

The very first thing I want to know- to pick up on what I'd promised you last time!- is how are we going to get NetBeans running on your computer!

You are going to need two bits of software

  • First, you need a respectable version of Oracle's Java Development Kit loaded onto your computer. A version called, "release 8 update 241" would be a good start. The Windows 64 bit download is 211 MB
  • Secondly, after you have JDK installed on your computer, we need to get Apache's NetBeans up and running! The one I'll point you to is a 112 MB download

Once all this is done- with a few relevant updates that are pretty much automatic!- this will have cost you a total of more than 323 MB of data!

Slow Internet

Does anyone know why the Internet is so slow at the moment? Well, here's a bit of reading for you....

SAs slow internet update: cable repair ship is underway, break could be fixed 4 April

Let's not panic! If we can't get your NetBeans working this week, we'll simply carry on working in Notepad for now!

You have a choice

  • IF you cannot get NetBeans working on your computer (for whatever reason, such as high data costs for example!), then you will need to have at least FileZilla installed onto your computer! If you remember correctly, the FileZilla download isn't even 8 MB!
  • But if you can get NetBeans working, well ...then you no longer need FileZilla!- simply because there is a FTP engine built into the heart of NetBeans!- that does all the file uploading and/or downloading you'll need to work on your website!

Brackets

If you can't get NetBeans running, or would prefer something a bit smaller, Black is ready to show you how to use Brackets as an option! This is the code editor that Black worked on last year and it's only about 80 MB to download. It's not as powerful as NetBeans and it does not have a build in FTP engine, but it gets the job done better than Notepad does!

FileZilla

You're going to need something to do all the FTP work I have ahead of you!- and I've given you plenty of time to work on FileZilla! Even though NetBeans can do its own FTP work FileZilla is still a useful program to have.

I've given you enough to think about for now!

Next steps

Be sure to read all this carefully to get a good feel of what I'm talking about. And before you ask, no, I'm not giving you any links yet!- first I want to hear from you

Once we've all spoken about this a bit, I'll start working though all the detail with you, starting with a recap on why we are talking about things like NetBeans and Brackets, compared to Notepad

Notes

IMPORTANT : Do not try to install this software on you own. Talk to me, to help you get this right. If you mess up your computer now, it's going to be a bit of a pest getting you up and running again! ....so let's not rush anything.

All I want to do is talk you through a few things. It's actually really easy to get all this software loaded- you have had a taste of this already, when I got you to install FileZilla on the computers on campus

Before I give you link to fetch the installation file, be sure to let me know if you have any data issues!- so that we can work something out.
